Ragging Kejariwal - India Today Conclave

Just finished watching a program on Aaj-Tak where Kejariwal was grilled by an audience consisting of journos and industrialists.  I don't know for sure but it must be the conclave for which he was flown to Delhi by India Today group.  I joined the program midway where a journalist was reading out a piece of bad poetry ridiculing Kejariwal's dress sense and his persistent cough and calling him a fugitive who ran away from private sector to public sector to politics and then away from power.  It was pathetic, outrageous, disgusting and clearly the act of a person whose motive was not journalism but some ulterior one.

Kejariwal did not respond and it must have given a lot of satisfaction to this man who was an epitome of people living off the fat of this country and holding the common man in contempt and having no qualms about snubbing him.  Kejariwal could have given an equally acerbic response but did not do so.  And he has won my heart by doing so.  It shows that he is not yet a typical politician who has a witty response ready for all criticism, imagined or genuine.  It shows that he has not yet imbibed the art of snobbery that helps one distance himself from Aam Aadmi and remains as vulnerable as an Aam-Aadmi.  It shows that he is a really simple minded person who is vulnerable to such unethical and unscrupulous barbs from unethical sharp shooters.  It shows that he is a person who is constantly focused on his purpose and not busy inventing clever cliches and responses.  Kejariwal, I stand with you more firmly than ever.

Coming to this sharp shooter's comments, here are my observations.  Nothing could be in worse taste than ridiculing a person for dressing like a common man.  And one who calls Kejariwal a fugitive must be someone whose upbringing tells him to stick to exploits of power at all costs and come what may.  Must be a person who would lick the feet of those who can do him a favor and kick at those who are either not in a position to do so or would not do so.  I wonder if he would have the guts to read out such sickening poetry to a RaGa or a NaMo or a Sonia or a Mulayam or a Lalu et al.

Can we not understand the simple fact that providing sops was not AAPs goal even though they have done so for the simple tactical reason that those who stood for change do not get weaned and swept away by the pied pipers of the establishment.  Their goal can ONLY be achieved by creating the anti-corruption infrastructure in the form of a credible Lokpal and NO OTHER MEANS.  And hence the decision to quit after this move was defeated was the ONLY CORRECT RESPONSE.  In fact if AAP had decided to stick to power that would be suspicious indeed.

As regards his constant movement and not sticking to anything including power, a sane person would see it as the sign of a vibrant intellect that is constant alive to its environment and committed to his purpose.  Sticking to a plum position in government like a corrupt-to-the-bone rishwatkhor, or to a post (खूंटा) like a buffalo or a seat of power like one of our sickening leaders is becoming of only a decadent, corrupt and obnoxious person and not a visionary or a revolutionary like Kejariwal.  Movement alone is the sign of life.

Journalists would do well to expel the person who read out this poetry from their profession.

Require full disclosure from practising professionals.

There is a lot of emphasis being put on disclosures by commercial organizations for the purpose of complete transparency, and rightly so.  A consumer who has to choose from organizations providing same services or products must be empowered to choose the best organization and must be able to base his decision on facts.  Regulators in many sectors have recognized this and are putting regulations in place for making such disclosures compulsory.

However such disclosure is conspicuously missing in the case of various professionals that provide services to individuals.  Such professionals include doctors, architects, lawyers etcetera.  Some of them merely hang a copy of their degree and a copy of their registration with the concerned professional body which give minimal information about the holder.  And one wouldn't be surprised if even these are not on display.

One of the many problems bogging down the country can be termed as apathy, or at best, indifference towards merit and quality.  Thus you can get admission to a professional course on the basis of merit, or on the basis of entitlements attaching to your caste, or on the basis of your parents' capacity to bankroll your way into a college.  The numbers in the latter two categories put together may outnumber those in the first category, namely, merit.

When these people set up their practice, a client has no way of knowing the stream through which they entered the college and got the degree / certificate that enables them to practice.  Customers often make a guess based on the surname of the practitioner which is absolutely wrong and erroneous.  It is quite possible that a person with a surname that indicates entitlement may have come through the general category purely on the basis of his merit.  Similarly it is quite possible that a person bearing a surname that doesn't indicate an entitlement may have muscled his way into the college through money power.  Also there may be clients who have strong convictions about entitlements and would only like to avail the services of one who made it through entitlement.

Accordingly all such professionals must be made to clearly, unambiguously and conspicuously display at their workplace the basis of their admission as well as their scores / grades.  This is the data on which a client can base his decision rationally.

I don't know if current regulations require this.  What we all know for sure is that this is not being done.  I propose that this be made mandatory.  Also there should be penalties for not doing so.

Our motto should be to promote innate merit, to cultivate merit wherever it can be and gradually discourage entitlement and money power as means of getting into a profession.

This seems to be happening through the social media where clients can share their experiences and rate a professional.  But the disclosures will help accelerate this process for newcomers for whom such data doesn't exist.

Dualism vs Non-dualism in Indian Politics

Sant Aapeshwar began his discourse, "Election after election and forever we have been hoping to figure out who is the all-good Brahma and who is the deceitful Maya.  And we have failed miserably each time.  And the surprise of surprises is this - we fail even after we switch our belief about who is who.  Many call this switching of belief anti-incumbency factor. An even bigger surprise is that after each anti-incumbency movement we emerge divided as ever and our miseries stronger than ever."  He paused and took a deep breath.

"O noble saint, is there a way out for us?", asked a haggard looking voter (HLV).  "There definitely is.  But then you have to walk the path of knowledge.", replied the Sant.  He continued, "Unless you realize that your misery arises from the false knowledge, Avidya, there is no hope for you.  What is this Avidya?  It is the belief that you have a choice and that the choice is between a good and an evil.  It is the belief that there is a duality at work and that both good and evil are vying for your vote.  It is the belief that you can make the right choice and this right choice will make your miseries go away."

"Noble saint, you confuse me.  Yes there is a duality.  If it were not there why would there be a need to vote?  It would not matter who won the contest.", blurted out the HLV.

"Dear one, have you not noticed that there are some who have realized the futility of voting and don't have any urge to vote.  And has who-emerges-the-winner really made any difference?  Don't you see the obvious?  There is no choice.  The power-holders and aspirants, the winner and the loser, are all the same.  There is no duality and there is little advantage in choosing one over the other."  Thus spake the Sant.

"Revered Sant, are you telling us to resign ourselves to these circumstances?  And are you telling us to refrain from casting our vote?", inquired the HLV.

The Sant smiled and spoke thus, "On the contrary, once the non-dualism in the present system has been comprehended, your task begins!  Once you realize that the system is evil and Maya alone, your search for the good, for the absolute Brahma starts.  But until you do that the system will persistently create a delusion of duality and egg you on for casting your vote.  For it is your vote and your vote alone that keeps this system alive."

"Learned one! if duality is a mere delusion from whence will this good Brahma arise?", asked the HLV.

"O seeker, open your eyes and look at me.  Don't you still see the arising that will soon cast away the Maya and the miseries wrought by it?", said the Sant.

"Forgive me o lord!  but how do I know that it is not the non-dual system desperately churning our more images to keep the delusion going for as long as possible.  How do I know if this is truly another option and not just a proliferation of the non-dual system?", questioned the bewildered HLV.

"You doomed ignorant fellow!", hissed the Sant, his eyes glowing with both pity and anger, "If you fail to recognize this alternative that has so graciously presented itself to you, you will be doomed forever.  Take this leap of faith or else learn to live with your miseries which will only grow exponentially."

The Sant calmed down and said in a loving voice, "To help you in your quest here are the questionnaires generated by me.  Pose these to the apparently many but essentially monolithic non-dual system and watch them dissolve away."

With this final utterance, the Sant closed his eyes and started to think of answers to the questionnaire sent to him by his one time follower who had grown disenchanted for reasons that the Sant saw as pure delusions but the questioner saw as edifying.

Let us hope that the truth shines out and prevails.

Constitutional fanatics!

Whether or not one holds religion to be good, I am sure we all agree that religious fanaticism of any hue is bad, bad, bad.  It is so because religious fanaticism has little to do with religion.  It uses religion as a tool to advance its hideous agenda and its practitioners violate the very core of the religion that they use and also profess to adhere to.

I find something similar happening in the political arena too.  Those who have defiled the political system and democratic institutions by encouraging muscle and money power in politics and looting the treasury, those who have actively suppressed merit for creating vote banks, those who have divided the electorate along all imaginable lines, and also those who probably cannot properly spell the word constitution, have all come together to defend the constitution!  To their mind creating unruly scenes, walking up to the speaker's table and pointing a finger in his face, and also advising him on how to discharge his duties in a tone befitting a terrorist, are all very valid and constitutional means of defending the holy constitution.

And yet we all know that their hearts bleed not for the constitution but for the fruits of power that the public has had the temerity to deny them.  They all profess to be supporting the Lokpal bill, but they want it to be introduced constitutionally.  This will give them enough time to toss it around till it recedes from public memory.  This is the trick that they have been playing for over sixty years and that they would like to perpetuate.  We have all suffered this farce for too long and it is strange that some people still advocate patience and following all the silly rules invented with the sole purpose of browbeating change seekers.

AAP is a ray of hope and we must not let the old guard fool us into thinking that they are the fanatics that we need to guard against.

My experiment with MNP.

When I finally returned to Lucknow after my retirement, I chose Tata Docomo (TD) as my GSM service provider.  It had good coverage in the city, one paisa per second tariff with lifetime validity, and a passable 2G data service.  3G appeared on the scene later on but TD was not in the reckoning in Eastern UP.  Noises about doing away with national roaming came a little later.  Again I found that TDs pan-India coverage was sparse and thus it was not likely to be enthusiastic about it.  This is borne out by its rather expensive roam free plans as compared to other operators. Also, you know how expensive does data become when you are roaming on another operator's network.  With these considerations in mind, I decided to port my number to another operator who offered 3G services in EUP and also had a good pan-India coverage.  I was aware that I was not likely to get one paisa per second call rates with lifetime validity on any other network.  But I nonetheless decided in favor of porting.  After all, what is the fun of having a good Android phone unless you have 3G connectivity?

I decided to port the number to Vodafone.  After a couple of visits to their outlet I could make out that they were not enthusiastic about porting in a number under prepaid plans.  While they were willing to carry out the porting immediately under postpaid, their system somehow made it difficult for them to do so under prepaid plans: At least that was the excuse offered to me.

So I decided to go to BSNL.  Their service may not be the best but their coverage certainly is.  And aren't they the pioneers in 3G service in India?  So I went to the nearest Customer Service Center (CSC) located near Bhootnath in Indira Nagar.  The girl on the counter advised me to go to the CSC in Mahanagar.  When I insisted, she agreed to accept the application but warned me that it might take much too long as all the staff trained in porting had gone for another training!

So I heeded her advice and headed to Mahanagar.  As soon as I parked the car, I was presented with a parking slip for Rs.20/=.  Once inside I joined the queue on the counter with the legend "Mobile service."  The person behind the counter had an indifferent look that matched my expectations.  He directed me to another person sitting near the entrance with no placard.  This gentleman turned out to be quite helpful and  helped me fill out the requisite forms and got me a new SIM.

A couple of days later I got a message from SancharSoft on my mobile with the TD SIM requesting me to dial 1507 from my number to be ported for the purpose of televerification to activate the number.  I called 1507 from my TD SIM but was told that it was an invalid number.  In the meantime a similar message was received from a sender BA-CYMN requesting me to dial 1507 using my new SIM (from BSNL.)  I inserted the new SIM and there was no network.  Nevertheless I dialed 1507 and got a message saying that I am not registered on the network!

I left the BSNL SIM in the phone and kept looking for the network to appear but to no avail.  Also I configured call forwarding on my TD SIM.  All calls were to be forwarded to my alternate Airtel number.  After a day I received a call forwarded from my TD SIM and was told that it was for televerification.  By the time the caller got to the third question, the call was disconnected: I had run out of balance on my TD SIM!  I tried calling back the number but there was no response.  I put the TD SIM back in my phone.

Finally I decided to visit BSNL once again undeterred by the stiff parking fee of Rs.20/=.  The helpful gentleman at the desk near the entrance consulted his register and said that order number so and so has been passed on this date by BSNL and TD should have stopped the service by now.  He advised me to get in touch with TD and assured me that this was no internal order but a computer generated one conveyed to TD.  I sent a mail to TD who told me that though I had generated an Unique Porting Code (UPC) on such and such date, they had not received any request from any operator for porting out the number till date and asked me to get in touch with the recipient service provider.  Needless to add that in my case TD was the donor network and BSNL the recipient network.

Next I found out customer service / complaint email ids of BSNL and sent a mail to them.  Surprisingly, I got a call on my alternate number soon enough.  After some buck passing and talking to a couple of persons, I was assured that they will look into the matter and perhaps the fault lay with the donor who was acting up.  This was followed by another call for televerification.  Fortunately I had the TD SIM live in my phone or else this call would have gone to my voice mailbox for want of balance.  Televerfication was completed and I was told that I should find myself on BSNL network in 6 day's time.  They didn't attach much importance to my reminder that a week was already over since the date of application.

I reverted to TD.  After sometime a poorly drafted SMS landed on my TD number reading "Your prepay to postpay request is cancelled due to MNP port out request is initiated by you."  I was surprised and wrote to TD saying that I had made no request for change to postpay and again requested them to expedite the porting.  After sometime I received a call from TD saying that my MNP request has been cancelled by them at my request!!  When I raised my voice to tell the caller that this was a lie and I had not withdrawn my MNP request, she advised me to go through the whole MNP process afresh.  I told the lady that this was outrageous and unless porting was carried out immediately I was going to report the matter to regulators.  I followed this up with a mail and got a response advising me to bear with them!  I escalated the matter to the appellate authority at TD.  He responded the next day saying that requisite documents from recipient network had been received only a recently, a week after initiation of the process by me, and that the number will be ported out after 5 days in accordance with the rules!!  This was followed by gobbledygook trumpeting their dedication to customer service.

I am now on the third day of the five day cooling down period.  TD service is running and I am hoping to get the BSNL signal two days down the line.  And this is the 11th day since I submitted my request for porting.

Wish me good luck!

Oppressors, Oppressed and an Absurd Saying.

There is a saying that those who put up with oppression are just as guilty as those who oppress them.  I find this truly diabolical.  This is the the equivalent of saying that if an enraged elephant crushes a tiny animal, the crushed animal is just as guilty as the elephant!!  Oppressors are always in a position of power.  On the other other hand the oppressed are helpless and have little option but to silently suffer at the hand of the oppressors.

The absurdity of the saying must have been obvious to everyone include the originator.  And it can be said with near certainty that the saying must have come from an oppressor.  It is so because declaring an oppressed man as guilty is the ultimate act of oppression indeed.  This is embodied in another saying in Hindi which goes like this - जबरा मारे भी और रोने भी ना दे!  This roughly translates to this - A heavy-handed person not only beats you up but also yells at you not to cry.

What probably was originally meant by the saying mentioned at the beginning was this - An oppressed person who stands up to an oppressor is far braver than him indeed.  But then some clever person turned it on its head and propagated the current version.  All right thinking people must boycott this diabolical saying in its current form.

What brought this saying to my mind is the current law that holds a bribe giver too as guilty and a clause in the LokPal Act that says that a complainant who is not able to prove the charges is liable to be punished with imprisonment.  So you are damned if you put up with demands of the corrupt - that is the saying (and also the law), isn't it? - and double-damned if you resist it and fail.  And the way system is rigged, you are more likely to fail than not. The question surfaces again - can perpetrator of a crime and its victim be treated alike?

Similarly, equality before law, though a noble concept, is definitely unattainable for the simple reason that those in power can always manipulate things to fool the law which is constrained to go by available evidences alone.  Thus for true equality there ought to be a much harsher and speedier law for those in power and all punishments awarded to them must be exemplary.  Will the supreme and powerful legislative bodies ever agree to this?
